Tooth Extractions in Decatur, GA

When a tooth is badly damaged, infected, loose, impacted, or causing discomfort, removal may be the healthiest option for protecting your smile. At Metro Decatur Dental Group PC in Decatur, GA, Dr. Gary Simms, DDS provides tooth extraction care with a focus on comfort, safety, and long-term oral health.

A tooth extraction may be recommended when a tooth cannot be repaired with a filling, crown, root canal, or other dental treatment. Before removing a tooth, Dr. Simms will evaluate your condition, explain your options, and discuss whether tooth replacement may be needed after extraction to help prevent shifting teeth, bite problems, and changes in chewing ability.

To schedule an appointment, call Metro Decatur Dental Group PC at 404-292-3133.

Why a Tooth May Need to Be Removed

Tooth removal is sometimes necessary when keeping the tooth could lead to more pain, infection, or damage to surrounding teeth and gums. Every patient’s situation is different, so an exam is the best way to determine the right treatment plan.

Common reasons for tooth extraction may include:

  • Severe tooth decay
  • Advanced gum disease
  • A cracked or broken tooth that cannot be restored
  • Impacted teeth
  • Crowding before orthodontic treatment
  • Infection or dental abscess concerns
  • Teeth that are poorly positioned in the mouth
  • Wisdom teeth that are causing pain or pressure

If another treatment can help save the tooth, Dr. Simms will review those options with you before recommending an extraction.

What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?

Before the extraction begins, the area around the tooth is numbed with local anesthetic. This helps prevent pain during the procedure while allowing you to remain comfortable.

During the extraction, you may feel pressure as the tooth is gently loosened and removed. Pressure is normal because the tooth must be carefully moved from the socket. However, you should not feel sharp pain. If you feel discomfort at any time, let the dental team know right away.

In some cases, a tooth may need to be sectioned before removal. This means the tooth is divided into smaller pieces so each section can be removed safely and more comfortably. This is commonly done when a tooth has curved roots, is firmly anchored, or cannot be removed easily in one piece.

After Tooth Extraction Care

After your tooth is removed, a blood clot needs to form in the socket to help stop bleeding and begin the healing process. You will be asked to bite down gently on gauze for about 30 to 45 minutes after the appointment. If bleeding continues, place a fresh gauze pad over the area and bite firmly for another 30 minutes.

For the first 72 hours, avoid anything that may disturb the clot. Do not rinse vigorously, drink through a straw, smoke, drink alcohol, or brush directly next to the extraction site. These actions can dislodge the clot and slow healing.

To support recovery:

  • Rest for the first 24 hours
  • Avoid vigorous exercise
  • Use an ice pack to help reduce swelling
  • Take medication as directed
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Eat soft, nutritious foods on the day of the extraction
  • Continue antibiotics if prescribed, even if symptoms improve
  • Resume normal brushing and flossing after 24 hours, while being gentle around the area

Some swelling and discomfort can happen after an extraction, but this should improve as healing begins. Most patients can return to normal activities within a few days.
